Shopping for Different Types of Disability Insurance

Depending on your needs, you will shop two very different types of disability insurance: Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability. Short term policies are less expensive and will have a shorter waiting period to get benefits. The waiting period on a short term policy will typically be from 0 to 14 days. But the maximum benefit period will usually be no longer than two years. In contrast, a long term disability policy will have a waiting period of 1 to 12 months with a maximum benefit period from 3 years to the rest of the insureds life.

Protection Features

You'll want to know what types of features you are going to see before you talk to an agent about disability insurance. First, a policy will be noncancelable. This means that the insurance company cannot cancel the policy for any reason, unless you don't pay your premiums. Throughout the life of the policy, you'll be able to renew the contract without having the insurance company increasing the premiums or decreasing your benefits.

Second, a policy will be guaranteed renewable. This will allow you to renew the contract with the same benefits you already have from year to year. The insurance company may increase your premiums as long as it does so to all other policyholders in the same class rating as you are in, but they cannot cancel your policy.
